Project-based learning is how we teach students on a job site. These skills test the student's ability to multitask, think quickly, and respect the work that they are doing. There are certain competencies that students must learn to be effective workers and effective leaders.
In construction, the number one concern is safety. Knowing what can hurt you on a job site is essential, but beyond that, attitude is everything. You can build up or break down your team with your actions; be accountable, show up on time, and anticipate the next task to make the job go by more smoothly.
As an addition to the program this year, the bees team has grown from a simple idea into a flourishing project.
Katie Benkleman, pictured on the left, is a senior at Whitefish High School. She leads her team as they navigate the science and art of beekeeping. Katie knew that her team needed someone to look to, so she reached out to a family friend who is a beekeeper. She scheduled a time to meet with their new mentor who is pictured on the right. Through this connection, they were able to gain hands-on experience with an expertise's guidance.
Pollinators are essential because they determine whether or not most of the Earth's flowering plants reproduce. In learning how to raise healthy hives, each team member is being equipped with knowledge that will allow them to increase the pollinator population.
In this photograph, the team is assembling their first bee hive with the intent of learning how to build their own from hive scratch in the process.
